Today, Keith had the shop open with the big fan going as he was spray staining some moulding. There's a large red knob that hangs down from the garage door and he saw a hummingbird just trying his darndest to get something out of that knob.
A few minutes later while I was sitting outside knitting, I heard Keith say 'Oh' and the way he said it I knew something was wrong. Thinking that maybe he'd heard on the radio that somebody died, I just stayed outside. All of a sudden he comes walking out of the shop with something in his hand. I thought maybe it was a mouse and he was going to show it to the dogs and tell them 'no, don't play with, kill, eat, or anything else'. It wasn't. It was the hummingbird. Keith found him on the floor and we're thinking that the fumes got to him. So we sat outside and watched him as first his eyes opened. Then there was some movement with his chest. Feathers. Then his beak started opening and closing.
After holding him for a bit, Keith decided that it might be a good idea to put him on a tree stump and as soon as he did the bird flew away. We watched for a bit as he flew in a few lopsided circles and then flew off as if nothing had ever happened.
Way to go Keith!! Hummingbirds are so special and interesting to watch - and you got to hold one! WOW what a lucky little fellow that you noticed him and got him out to fresh air. Now you know you are obligated to put up a feeder so they will leave the knob on the door alone..lol.
